Ever since Megyn Kelly’s NBC morning show premiered in the fall, her ratings have been steadily plummeting. NBC executives made it clear to Kelly that her days are numbered this month when they announced they would be sending Katie Couric with the rest of the Today team to cover the Olympics in South Korea, leaving Kelly at home in New York City.
Now, insiders are revealing how Kelly reacted to the news, and it’s clear she did not take it well.
Daily Mail reported that Kelly “threw an Olympic fit” when she learned that Couric had been offered the job of covering next month’s Winter Games opening ceremony for NBC. When she signed her $23 million contract with NBC, Kelly insisted that she should not be forced to cover special events as well as her usual responsibilities. However, she was under the impression that the firing of Matt Lauer over sexual misconduct allegations meant she was in line for the big events.
Page Six reported that Kelly “thought she had it all played out perfectly, by saying ‘No’ before the Matt Lauer scandal…[NBC] was stupid enough to put in her contract that she could say ‘Yes’ or ‘No.'”
Kelly then “complained to her staff” so that the company’s chairman, Andrew Lack, would hear about her being upset, but Lack reportedly “didn’t care.”
An insider at NBC said that Lack has now come to think of Kelly as a “diva” who will not become part of the network’s “inner circle.”
“It is odd that NBC News would leave its highest-paid host at home,” said The Hill’s Joe Concha. “Megyn’s ratings are improving a bit as the show has focused on the sexual harassment issue, but she could still use the kind of exposure and interviews you only get when physically at the Olympics.”
“I sense that NBC feels Kelly could be a lightning rod and distract viewers from the feel-good nature of Olympics coverage,” added media analyst Jeff McCall.
Clearly, Kelly has gone into panic mode, as she realizes her world is crashing down around her. SHARE this story if you think NBC should FIRE Megyn Kelly!
